Anticipation, excitement, fear, surprise, sadness and joy – these are just some of the words that describe the participants’ feelings at this year’s Spelling Bee held from February 1 to 15, 2019 among all elementary students.
These feelings were evident from the first elimination round, semi-final to the final round of the competition. Students displayed great enthusiasm in learning the pronunciation of the words, and they took initiative to study by themselves at home. During the final round, twelve students from each grade competed against each other to take home the top prize. There was quite the battle among the final few in every grade. Eventually, we were able to award the top three of each grade and the classmates of those who won were very excited. The friends cheered and showed how proud they were of their classmates and they even made paper banners to show their support for them.
Although, defeat is always a part of every competition and only one could emerge victorious, this Spelling Bee competition was a positive experience. Moreover, IICS provided a platform that motivated the students to try and excel in their decoding and encoding skills. English teachers hope that being a part of this event may have impacted the students’ lives with remarkable memories and improved skills and we are so glad to have been a part of this great experience.
