Presentation software has become a vital tool for teaching and learning. Not only do these applications have the ability to show text, they can do so while animating images. Some applications have features to make notes, while others offer “white board†features. They help students to understand materials easily.
At IICS, most of the teachers can create presentations using PowerPoint. This Fall, we offered two professional development courses designed to take our teachers to the next level in their skills using presentation software. IICS teachers were given an option to advance their skills in PowerPoint, or to learn a new program called Prezi. Both courses were offered over four sessions of 45 minutes each.
PowerPoint is a complete presentation graphics package. It gives you everything you need to produce a professional-looking presentation. In this advanced class, we helped teachers learn how to integrate PowerPoint with other software such as Microsoft Excel and Flash. Teachers also learned more about using custom animations.
Prezi is an exciting new program that has an attractive zooming feature that allows teachers to demonstrate the “big picture†of their subject and then zoom into the details. It also allows teachers to illustrate relationships between concepts. In this class, we introduced Prezi and taught the basic skills needed for teachers to be able to create their own Prezi presentations. One teacher put her new knowledge into practice right away by preparing her devotions in Prezi.
Students have already begun to benefit from the things that teachers have learned in our professional development program. The lessons at IICS are now more engaging!
